How Often Should You Really Groom a Cat?

Posted by Sam Okafor on 15th Feb 2026

It depends more on coat type than most owners realise.

Most cats keep themselves clean, but a little help prevents mats, hairballs and skin problems.

  • Short coats: a quick brush once a week
  • Medium coats: twice a week
  • Long coats such as Persians: daily, with a wide-tooth comb first
  • Senior cats: more often, as they groom less themselves

Make it a good experience

Keep sessions short, brush in the direction of the coat and finish with a treat. If your cat is matted, book a groom rather than cutting knots out at home.
